This week, we began talking Gatsby.

Monday: Touchstone Assessment 1 & Get Gatsby books - Reading guide linked here
Tuesday: Poem analyses: "Richard Cory", "I Hear America Singing", & "I, Too, Sing America"; Powerpoint notes on the miserable birth of Modernism and the welcomed birth of the Jazz Age, Flapper Culture, and the Harlem Renaissance
Wednesday: Journal: Respond to this artist’s reflection on what she calls the destruction of her culture. What does what you see and hear tell you about the artist’s emotions and thoughts about the time she’s living in? Afterward, explore one of the concepts on your own: Modernism, the Jazz Age, Flapper culture, the Harlem Renaissance, or the Hemingway Hero. Find a 1920s poem that reflects the concepts relevant to whichever you decide to research. Write one fully developed paragraph analyzing the poem according to that concept (See model here).
Thursday: Journal: Write about your favorite movies. What draws you to them? Do they share a common theme, style, emotional impact? Why do you think you are drawn to that film genre? Afterward, we will begin film analysis by discussing these notes on film technique and determining film analysis groups and film focuses.
Friday: Gatsby chapters 1 & 2 reading quiz; Luisa's presentation; film analysis pre-viewing
Warm wishes for a happy, peaceful, not-at-all Modernist break!
